Chelsea vs. Manchester City
Minute Commentary
90' CITY WIN THE CLASH OF THE TITANS
There goes the full time whistle and the Manchester City bandwagon keeps on rolling. It ends Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.
90' DANILO REPLACES DE BRUYNE
The matchwinner appears to have picked up an injury here as De Bruyne will be replaced by Danilo for the final 90 seconds. City fans will be hoping that is nothing serious - especially after the injuries suffered by Aguero and Mendy.
90' THREE ADDITIONAL MINUTES
There will be three minutes added on at Stamford Bridge - is there to be some late drama in London?
90' HEADED OVER
The delivery finds a blue shirt, but Andreas Christensen's header sails safely over Ederson's bar.
90' LATE YELLOW CARD
Nicolas Otamendi has a tendency to be very rash and with Willian going nowhere, the Argentine goes in with a wild challenge that earns him a booking and gives the hosts a late chance to whip one into the box. Stupid from the centre-back.
88' TWO MINUTES LEFT
As Fernandinho heads a corner straight into the gloves of Thibaut Courtois, we tick into the final two minutes of normal time. Chelsea need more heroics like they managed in midweek if they are to keep pace with the Premier League's leading teams.
86' SILVA FOR SILVA
It is worth noting that Bernardo Silva entered the fray a while ago, replacing his namesake David for the final few minutes - he is yet to make an impact, however.
84' VITAL BLOCK
That is heroic from Rudiger. A wonderful counter from City sees Sterling spot Jesus at the back post and find him with a dinked cross and the Brazilian's volley is a beauty. It is destined for the far corner until the former Roma man gets back to head off the line. How crucial could that prove to be?
82' GUNDOGAN WARMING UP
Ilkay Gundogan is warming up on the touchline for the away side - Pep Guardiola clearly fancying solidifying his midfield as the time continues to tick down.
80' TEN MINUTES LEFT
There are ten minutes of normal time left at Stamford Bridge, with this one still firmly in the balance - what a huge period pf play we have coming up.
78' CHELSEA COMING BACK
It has only been but a few minutes, but ever since those attacking changes from Conte, Chelsea have been firmly in the ascendancy and look threatening now they have a focal point up top. The Italian will surely regret showing City the amount of respect he has so far this afternoon.
75' LETTING CITY OFF
Given City have a midfielder at left-back and teo very uncovincing centre-backs at the heart of the back four, it is so surprising how little Chelsea have threatened the visitors' backline and their reluctance to throw on a striker to unsettle that dodgy rearguard. Conte has done that now, but is it too little too late?
73' HAZARD AND BAKAYOKO WITHDRAWN
Here come those changes then, with Bakayoko and Hazard, surprisingly, the men to make way for Chelsea. What can Batshuayi and Pedro bring to the team in these closing stages? Antonio Conte needs a big impact.
71' DOUBLE SUB
There will be a double substitution from Chelsea at the next break of play, with Michy Batshuayi and Pedro being readied as they plot a comeback in the final 20 minutes.
69' CHELSEA 0-1 MANCHESTER CITY
Bang! That is how to break the deadlock! De Bruyne starts the move with a swift pass into Jesus, who holds it up for the Belgian nicely before the latter bends a fierce left-footed effort into the far corner from 20 yards. There is not much Chelsea could have done about that - top drawer.
68' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Outstanding from Kevin de Bruyne as the midfielder gives Manchester City a deserved lead with a stunning goal!
66' SHOULD BE A GOAL UP
Just like that City up the ante and nearly open the scoring. A wonderful ball from Jesus releases Sterling down the right and his pull-back finds David Silva in all sorts of room in the area. The Spaniard tries to pick his spot, but his effort is brilliantly blocked by Andreas Christensen.
64' STALEMATE
City are still the better team, but they are struggling to break Chelsea down and with 25 minutes left on the clock you get the sense that the Citizens are getting a little desperate and the hosts look more content with the point, should they get it of course.
62' ANOTHER QUICK FREE-KICK
As in the first half, the hosts catch City sleeping again with a quick free-kick, with Hazard stealing some room on the angle of the area. His fierce shot is beaten away by the alert Ederson, however. Changes are being readied on the sideline by the looks of it.
60' FERNANDINHO CAUTIONED
Eden Hazard leads a rare counter for Chelsea and is hacked down from behind by Fernandinho, who picks up his customary booking just on the hour mark. The big men are being sent up for this free-kick for the Blues.
58' WILLIAN EXPERIMENT NOT WORKING
Eyebrows will have been raised when Willian was brought on to replace Morata instead of Batshuayi and so far the tactic has been a rousing failure from Antonio Conte - for once. The Brazilian and Hazard are not seeing any of the ball up top for the hosts and City are swarming all over them.
56' AMBITIOUS ATTEMPT
It is still all City and Raheem Sterling chances his arm as a corner is cleared into his path, but his first time volley flies well over the bar. He has been in scoring form as of late as well, so will be disappointed not to work Courtois there.
54' SHOULD BE A PEN
Looking at replays of that Jesus appeal, that looks a definite foul from Christensen. However, it is one of those where it seems easier not to give it and to let it go, but if it was anywhere else the referee would have blown his whistle.
52' PENALTY APPEALS
A really clever turn from Gabreil Jesus sees him past Christensen and into the area, before the defender bodychecks him in the area and sends him to ground. No penalty according to the referee - this observer thought that was a spot kick on first glance.
50' VITAL BLOCK
It is City who have started the better of the two at the start of this second period, with a fine move down the left seeing Sterling escape into space, but his pull-back into a congested box is blocked behind by Gary Cahill. Chelsea have been very sluggish since the restart.
48' NO CHANGES TO REPORT
There have been no changes from either side going into this second half - will the pattern remain the same as the match ticks on?
46' SECOND HALF UP AND RUNNING
The second half is go at Stamford Bridge - a big 45 minutes coming up.
45' CHELSEA 0-0 MANCHESTER CITY
There has been a lot of quality on show thus far at Stamford Bridge between these two heavyweights, but it has all been in the middle third rather than at either end where it really matters. Man City are without star man Sergio Aguero today and Chelsea also lost their main source of goals midway through the half as Alvaro Morata's hamstring went ping. We could struggle for goals in the second period as well then, but it is sure to be an interesting battle, as the first period was. The hosts have surrendered a lot of the ball, but look a threat on the break, while Pep Guardiola will be hoping his side can turn their possession-based dominance into goals. Join us back here in a few moments for live text commentary of the second half.
45' NO GOALS AT THE BREAK
The half time whistle sounds and we are level at Chelsea 0-0 Manchester City at the interval.
45' TWO ADDITIONAL MINUTES
As we enter two minutes of first half stoppage time, Fernandinho forces a fine save from Courtois at the near post from a corner.
44' NO PRESENCE
Eden Hazard leads a quick counter for Chelsea, but without their number nine in the area, he has to check back out wide and in the end the move fizzles out without any danger. Sighs from the home crowd.
42' HALF TIME ON THE HORIZON
Three minutes to go until the break and it is Chelsea who look slightly more likely to break the deadlock, but they are lacking their focal point now Morata has been withdrawn.
40' KEY MEN KISSING
So, both sides' key strikers are missing, with Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Morata both unable to compete due to injury. Which team will deal better with these setbacks you wonder? It is all very tight and cagey so far at Stamford Bridge.
38' WILLIAN IN A FREE ROLE
It seems as though Hazard and Willian have been given free roles up top for the Blues, with Kante being moved back into his customary central position. Antonio Conte currently indulging in some much-needed problem solving here.
36' WILLIAN REPLACES MORATA
Alvaro Morata's day is indeed done and Willian is the man to come on for the striker. Michy Batshuayi looks on dejectedly on the bench.
34' MORATA NOT LOOKING RIGHT
Alvaro Morata has just signalled for the ball to be put out of play and it doesn't look as though he will be fine to continue. If that is a hamstring injury, as he is currently indicating, he is off.
32' VERY EVEN
It is difficult to say who the better team is at the moment, as both sides have had their moments, but neither has really created a clear-cut chance as of yet. The tension is palpable around Stamford Bridge at present.
30' STRANGE CHANGE
Tiemoue Bakayoko is in the middle for Chelsea, with Kante and Fabregas on the right and left respectively and Hazard in a free role behind Morata. Surely the hosts would be better off with Willian or Pedro on both flanks as opposed to Kante and Fabregas?
28' JUST TOO FAR
All of a sudden, the visitors show their teeth with a frightening break full of pace and quality. That is until the final ball from Sterling on the right, whose cross is just too far ahead of Silva, who would have had a tap-in.
26' DICEY AT THE BACK
City are stretched defensively for the first time in the match as Rudiger's cross from the right isn't fully cleared and the resulting shot from Azpilicueta is flapped at by Ederson, with Rudiger unable to pick out a teammate with the next cross.
23' SCRAPPY
The game has entered somewhat of a scrappy period here, with a number of niggly little fouls in the centre of the park disrupting the flow of the game. We need a spark from somewhere - there is enough quality out there to provide it.
21' STONES INJURED
John Stones climbs high to send a towering header just wide of the post, but does himself a mischief when he lands and is having treatment for what looks like a wrist injury. City are temporarily down to ten men.
19' POOR DELIVERY
Stamford Bridge holds its breath nervously as De Bruyne stands over a wide free-kick, but his delivery is uncharacterstically poor and the ball sails behind for a goal kick. Let off for the hosts.
17' INCHES OFF
Morata, as he does so well, plays off the shoulder and is in on goal following a mistake in th tackle from Otamendi as Fabregas released him. The flag is up though, and replays show the Spaniard was inches offside. Warning signs for the away side there, however.
15' KANTE ON THE RIGHT?
Has Antonio Conte elected for a surprise change in formation here? The first 15 minutes suggest so - Kante, normally full of energy in central areas, has almost been situated entirely on the right so far - what has the Italian spotted I wonder?
13' HORROR MOMENT
Thibaut Courtois looks cool and collected, but his heart will have skipped a beat here. He takes an age to try and clear the ball downfield, is charged down by Gabriel Jesus and the Brazilian nearly deflects the ball into the net. Nearly a horror moment for the keeper.
11' GAME GOING AS PLANNED
There is nothing I can tell you that you wouldn't have already known before kick-off. Manchester City are seeing a lot of the ball, with Chelsea dropping off and looking for anything they can get on the break with the pace of Hazard and Morata.
9' CITY PRESSING WELL
A lot of the early running being made by City here as they are pressing extremely high and looking to force their opponents into mistakes. Chelsea, on the other hand, are dropping off and looking to hit Pep Guardiola's men on the counter - a real clash in styles so far.
7' STRAIGHT AT COURTOIS
Half a chance for the visitors here as Kevin De Bruyne stands over a free-kick from a central position, 25 yards out. The Belgian strikes it well, but it is right down the throat of his compatriot Thibaut Courtois.
5' ANOTHER HALF CHANCE
N'Golo Kante makes a nuisance of himself on the right for Chelsea, tenacious work seeing him earn some room before delivering a cross that Morata heads just over the bar from the angle. The in-form forward is looking lively already.
3' QUICK THINKING
Cesc Fabregas takes a quick free-kick that takes Man City completely by surprise and initially it looks as though Alvaro Morata is in. Some good defending from John Stones sees off the danger in the end, but it has been a sleepy start from City.
1' KICK OFF
Here we go then - Manchester City get us started in this blockbuster clash.
0' FULL TEAMS
Chelsea: Courtois, Rudiger, Christensen, Cahill, Azpilicueta, Kante, Fabregas, Bakayoko, Alonso, Hazard, Morata. Subs: Caballero, Zappacosta, Kenedy, Moses, Willian, Pedro, Batshuayi. Man City: Ederson, Walker, Stones, Otamendi, Delph, De Bruyne, Fernandinho, Silva, Sane, Jesus, Sterling. Subs: Bravo, Danilo, Gundogan, Mangala, Silva, Zinchenko, Toure.
0' CITY FULL OF PEP
The mood around Manchester City at present seems to be one of relentless belief and positivity, but it must be remembered that the Citizens actually have less points this time around than they did this time last season. 2016-17 ended with Pep Guardiola without a trophy to his name for the first time in his career, so any complacency in the City ranks will surely be tempered by that memory. Additionally, serious injuries to key men Sergio Aguero and Benjamin Mendy will be sure to hit today’s visitors hard for the next couple of months, so the league leaders will have to show their teeth to stay at the top of the table following an incredible start to the campaign. It will be interesting to see if they can maintain their blistering form given those key absences – starting this evening at the home of the holders.
0' CONTE'S CHELSEA CRUISING
It seems decidedly odd that the reigning champions of the Premier League can be written off after the very first game of the season, but that was seemingly the case with Chelsea. After a horrendous opening day defeat to Burnley and a summer transfer window full of angst and doubt, the critics were in full voice, but since then Antonio Conte’s men have got themselves firmly back on the straight and narrow. The Blues’ form in the league has been a mirror image of last term’s incredible success and they are now fighting up near the top and a dramatic comeback victory over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League in the week will do wonders for their ever-growing confidence. This is just as good a time as any, then, to be taking on a rampant Manchester City side at Stamford Bridge.
